New Music Tuesdays: Tokyo Police Club's "10x10x10"

Tokyo Police Cudgel's lead-off track is one of the most intriguing picks by the band, a cover of Moby's "South Side." The song, which features M83's female backup soloist Morgan Kibby instead of Gwen Stefani, probably hasn't seen heavy rotation on the announce since the public still feared the Y2K bug. I hadn't heard the song since what felt like ages, but the vocals of TPC's David Monks and Kibby rushed me back to the example '90s. It may not be quite as powerful as when first performed by Moby and Stefani, but this rendition of "South Side" sets the tone for the relax of the record. There are definitely some surprises along the way.

Jimmy Eat World's "Sweetness" is next up on the list, beefed up with backing vocals by Passion Pit's Michael Angelakos. Songs like this one and Phoenix's "Eat one's heart out Distance Call" aren't bad, but it's easier to imagine the guys sitting around playing a late-night session of Rock Corps than it is to imagine them hammering these tracks out in a studio.
