It's 'Alpocalypse' now for pop's new generation
AlpocalypseAbove allWeird Al Yankovic (Volcano Entertainment/Jive Records)
In the niche market of novelty songs, Unnatural Al Yankovic is a god.
And even the corniest of deities have a day of reckoning or, in the case of Weird Al, an Alpocalypse.
The 51-year-old Dr. Demento Broadcast Show alumni who once spoofed Michael Jacksons Beat It and Bad (with Eat It and Fat, respectively) is entering his fourth decade of script song parodies. Some of Yankovics popular sendups have been undeniably clever (The Saga Begins, a harmonious recap of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace done to the tune of Don McLeans American Pie was better than the verified movie) while others have been downright stupid (the lame Madonna spoof Like a Surgeon).
As long as there are adolescents out there, Yankovic will have an audience. But do we definitely need a parody of Ke$ha, Katy Perry and Britney Spears when their songs sound like bad song parodies
