Britney Spears plays it safe at Izod Center

Ever so minutes, she let the kids onstage.

The catwalk on the floor of the sold-out Izod Center was suddenly so full of gyrating bodies that it was bruiser to catch a glimpse of Britney Spears . When she emerged from the crowd, singing "I Wanna Go," her latest hit, she dropped her game face and looked thrilled for the first time at the Friday night concert.

For a moment, it was possible to see the controversial Spears not as a "sexy assassin," or a femme fatale, or even a pop act, but as a still-young woman who loves club music, and wants nothing more than to surrender to the rhythm.

Then the beat changed, and Spears went dextral back to business.

Britney Spears has a reputation for recklessness, fed by a public meltdown that culminated in a rehab stint. None of that chaos has ever been reflected in her music.

"Femme Fatale," her new album, is an intermittently fetching collection of sleek synth-pop, as streamlined and aerodynamic as a freshly minted luxury automobile. It is also the end stage of Spears’ disconnection, and self-effacement: She wrote none of the songs on the album, contributed next to nothing to their production, and allowed her voice to be digitally manipulated to the level of unrecognizability.
