NBC's 'America's Got Talent': Howard Stern Shouldn't Be Singled Out

. The genius competition returns to NBC for its seventh season this Monday night, with the addition of Howard Stern as a judge – and the assembling is not at all happy about it.

PTC’s scathing letter urges companies to reconsider their media buys in the show, which heretofore had provided a ‘ephemeral respite from the otherwise-ubiquitous stream of violent, profane and sexually-explicit content on prime time seed television.’ With the addition of Stern, the Council maintained, AGT will ‘likely result in a sharp enhance in explicit content…’

Let’s get that last issue out of the way first. NBC, like other free broadcast channels, has standards and practices that prohibit forthright content from making it to air. It is not a perfect system. Today’s content on an eight o’clock program would have turned my mother’s hair at half-cock gray (or made her watch more TV – I’m not sure). Point is, the addition of a new cast member does not mean NBC will quickly turn into Showtime.
